Its time for men to take the lead in the fight against violence against women...
Think Young Women,
University of The Gambia, and Youth Action Movement will be organizing ''Young
Men Day’ which is part of the ‘Enough Is Enough’ Campaign' to commemorate
International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women (25th November)
at the GOVI Hall on 5th December 2012.
Violence against women and girls is a problem of
pandemic proportions and violations of human rights. Many young women/girls
experience physical or sexual violence from men in their lifetime – the
majority by husbands, intimate partners or someone they know.
The most common form of violence experienced by women
globally is physical violence inflicted by an intimate partner, with women
beaten, coerced into sex or otherwise abused. Therefore involving men in the
fight against the menace will greatly reduce the inhumane act.
In addition, the UN Secretary-General’s UNiTE campaign is proclaimed
every 25th of the month as Orange Day, therefore this program is set to
coincide with International Day for the Elimination of Violence
against Women and also Orange Day in order to encourage people to wear
orange to take a stand on ending violence against women & girls, and
encourage all your friends to do the same.
The campaign will take the format of a day forum, radio programs and
press briefing. During the forum there will be presentations, testimonies,
panel and plenary sessions to raise awareness for both young men and women and
information kits will be given on prevention of violence and sexual assault
against women at the end of the forum.
In addition all participants will sign a pledge to take a stand against
ending violence. The forum is expected to bring together young men from
different works of life including tertiary institutions, organisations and law
enforcement officials. The forum is geared towards breaking the barrier that
exists between men and women in terms of gender base violence. We hope at the
end of the day, men and women will have a frank discussion on the issue of
gender base violence. Media Briefing and Radio programs will be conducted
before the event!
